In the last nine years a new era of sports started in India, which is not just about making India a big power in the field, but also about empowering society through the medium of sports, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi while inaugurating the Khelo India University Games on Thursday.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday said that the players competing in the Khelo India University Games from all over the country represent India's new energy.
Khelo India has also restored the prestige of India's traditional sports", the Prime Minister said as he highlighted the scholarships provided by the Government to encourage various indigenous sports like Gatka, Mallakhamb, Thang-ta, Kalaripayattu and Yogasan.
UP CM Yogi Adityanath said, "Sports activities have reached every village under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi UP. The work of construction of stadiums in every district of Uttar Pradesh has been taken forward at a fast pace."
The Khelo India University Games runs from May 25 to June 3. Four cities across Uttar Pradesh - Lucknow, Varanasi, Greater Noida and Gorakhpur - will host most events. Only the shooting events are scheduled in New Delhi.
