The tunnel was about 20 meters (70 feet) deep. The underground route was investigated and destroyed under the leadership of the engineering battalion and with the cooperation of the Yalam unit.
The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) on Sunday released footage of a tunnel in southern Gaza, where Hamas was allegedly holding around 20 hostages at different times, CNN reported.
After coming under fire for claiming that the United Nations had no knowledge of Hamas' tunnel system in the Gaza Strip, a spokesman for the global body's chief offered a clarification to the Tazpit Press Service.
The facilities, located along the Salah al-Din Road, consist of weapons factories above and below ground, where rockets, weapons and ammunition were produced. The sites were connected by dozens of tunnel shafts.
Despite the presence of a Hamas terror tunnel system in the Gaza Strip now thought to be larger in scale than the London Underground, the United Nations insists it had no idea the tunnels were being built.
Hamas "opted to invest precious resources in building terrorist infrastructure used to harm Israeli civilians and IDF forces, while cynically exploiting the civilian population in the Gaza Strip," the military statement said.
