Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Shatrughan Sinha on Saturday accused the BJP of repeatedly using religion to provoke voters, while praising West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's leadership and popularity across the state.
He drew attention to the constitutional right to build places of worship and said that he is not doing anything unconstitutional, "as anyone can make a temple or church, so can I".
This comes after the Trinamool Congress (TMC) suspended West Bengal MLA Humayun Kabir on Thursday over his remarks, in which he claimed he would inaugurate a Babri Masjid in the state's Murshidabad district today.
Suspended Trinamool Congress MLA Humayun Kabir is set to lay the foundation stone of Babri Masjid in Beldanga on Saturday, an event that has prompted heightened administrative attention and extensive security arrangements in Murshidabad district.
Speaking with ANI in Murshidabad, Kabir alleged that she is working in the interests of the RSS. Kabir pointed out the significant increase in RSS branch offices in the state, from 400 in 2011 to 12,000 currently, implying Banerjee's alignment with the organisation.
In a strong statement targeting the Chief Minister, Kabir said to reporters, "The Chief Minister should be an ex-Chief Minister. In 2026, the Chief Minister will not become the Chief Minister, will not be sworn in, and will be branded as an ex-Chief Minister."
"We noticed that one of our MLAs from Murshidabad suddenly declared that he would build the Babri Masjid. Why suddenly Babri masjid? We already warned him. As per the decision of our party, TMC, we are suspending MLA Humayun Kabir," the Kolkata mayor said in a press conference here.
"If something is heavy it will fall. Our rupee has strength & weight. That's why it's falling," Moitra posted on X, along with a graphic of PM Modi looking down at the falling rate of the rupee.
Trinamool Congress leader Derek O'Brien has said that the opposition parties accepted government's proposal for discussion on electoral reforms in the spirit of parliamentary democracy and made a tactical change in their stance.
