The troops of the Border Security Force (BSF) in Meghalaya launched an operation, thwarted smuggling attempts near the Bangladesh border in two separate operations, and seized goods worth Rs 11 lakh, said an official statement by the BSF on Friday.
In a big blow to the smugglers, the Border Security Force (BSF) foiled three gold smuggling attempts within a week and seized 2.4 kg gold worth Rs 1.48 crore from South Bengal.
Based on secret information, a team of STF carried out an operation in Katahbari area under the Gorchuk police station in Guwahati, DIG (STF) Partha Sarathi Mahanta told ANI.
The discovery of the smuggled contraband came to light during a routine check of police team from Police Station Udhampur, led by Station House Officer (SHO) Inspector Raghubir Choudhary.
The land has been seized under Section 68-F of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act 1985, police said, adding that the drug peddler was found involved in two separate cases under Sections 8 and 21 of the NDPS Act at Kralgund police station.
According to officials, the seized gold is valued at Rs 98 lakh, and it was brought by a passenger who had arrived from the capital city of Qatar, Doha.
