Restoration work is underway on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway and other key roads, which remained closed for the second consecutive day on Sunday following snowfall, officials said.
Eight wagons of a goods train derailed between Lahaban and Simultala stations under the Asansol Division of Eastern Railway late Friday night, disrupting train operations on both Up and Down lines, according to the Chief Public Relations Officer of East Central Railway.
The strategic Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) has remained completely shut for the past eight days in the Thard area of Udhampur district, following massive landslides triggered by recent heavy rainfall.
The Chandigarh-Manali National Highway, which had been closed due to heavy rainfall and landslides, has been reopened for small vehicles on Wednesday evening.
The Jammu-Rajouri National Highway has been blocked due to a landslide in the region, bringing the traffic to a standstill.
Restoration work is underway to remove the debris and clear the road for the movement of vehicles.
"One of them is the Dharampur-Kotli route, and the other is National Highway 21 (NH-5). Some portions have been reopened, but landslides and rockslides continue to disrupt access. The situation is dynamic--routes are being cleared but get blocked again due to falling debris," Negi said.
Harang bridge at Bhangarpar on the Kalain-Silchar road in Assam collapsed on Tuesday night, causing two heavily loaded trucks to fall into the river below.
Restoration efforts are currently underway on the Phidang Bailey Bridge after it sustained partial damage caused by the strong current of the Teesta River.
During this time of Chillai Kalan, the Gurez-Bandipora road and Dawar-Tulail road were closed after a thick blanket of snow covered the road, disrupting the traffic movement in the area.
