Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah on Saturday cautioned that his party may be left with no choice but to approach the Supreme Court if the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir continues to be delayed.
As Union Home Minister Amit Shah is in Jammu and Kashmir for a two-day visit, National Conference MLA Tanvir Sadiq has raised the issue of the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.
Awami Ittehad Party MLA Khursheed Ahmad Sheikh launched a strong protest in Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly on Monday raising the issue of statehood and Article 370.
Mir emphasised that Jammu and Kashmir's current status as a Union Territory is a major obstacle to effectively serving the people. According to Mir, the restoration of statehood is not a partisan issue but rather a people's demand. He clarified that this demand has nothing to do with the BJP
The Cabinet which met under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, on Thursday passed a unanimous resolution for restoration of statehood in its original form.
The Cabinet has authorised CM Abdullah to take up the matter with the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Government of India for restoration of statehood.
Advocate Gopal Shankarnarayan mentioned the application for urgent listing of the matter, to which a bench headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud said that it will list the case.
The former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, while speaking to reporters, said, "Our priority will be to unite Jammu and Kashmir and end the hatred spread in this election. Statehood must be restored so that the state can function and we can get on with our jobs."
Jammu and Kashmir People's Democratic Party leader Iltija Mufti said on Friday that PDP will raise voice not only for restoration of statehood but also for Article 370 and for resolution of other issues" concerning the union territory.
The NC chief also expressed hope that they would be treated fairly by the Union government, and that discussions on the restoration of statehood for J-K could begin soon.
Communist Party of India's (CPI) Rajya Sabha MP P Sandosh Kumar said on Tuesday that the people of Jammu and Kashmir have rejected the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
