Over 40 people have been rescued after an iron bridge collapsed over the Indrayani River near Kundamala village in Maharashtra's Pune district, CRPF Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Vaibhav Nimbalkar said on Sunday.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday expressed grief over the deaths following the collapse of a bridge over the Indrayani River at Indori in Pune district.
"More than 100 doctors have reached the hospital campus to support the government. Unfortunately, we have lost four medical students and a doctor's wife. But fortunately, we have saved more than 45 medical students in the hostel area."
A local who resides near the AI-171 crash site said that the locals rescued injured students from the BJ Medical College. He added that people were alive when they rescued them, but two died on their way to the hospital.
According to plastic surgeon Dr Dinesh Kadam, a Chinese national with 40 per cent burns and an Indonesian citizen in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) are being closely monitored. Both patients require more time in the ICU, whereas the condition of the other four crew members is stable.
According to the police, a group of 11 people from Jaipur had gone for a picnic on the riverbank when some of them entered the water to bathe and slipped into a deep stretch of the river. Efforts by others in the group to rescue them also turned tragic.
According to Plastic Surgeon Kadam, the six rescuees are from multiple nationalities, including Chinese and Indonesian. Of the six rescued crew members, two have suffered critical injuries.

As heavy rains continued to lash parts of Northeast India, the Indian Army, Assam Rifles, and Manipur Fire Service launched extensive rescue operations in flood-affected areas, rescuing over 1,500 people across various districts.
According to officials, due to heavy outbursts of rainfall, six buildings and one Assam-type house in Chandmary and Bazar areas in Mizoram's Lawngtlai district were affected on Saturday evening. The district administration has rescued the people from the debris.
