The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Tuesday filed a prosecution complaint, or chargesheet, against former actress and model Harshavardini Ranya, alias Ranya Rao, and others in a Rs 102.55 crore gold smuggling case.
Ranya was taken into custody on March 3 at Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport after being found in possession of 14.8 kg of gold upon her arrival from Dubai.
The High Court of Karnataka on Thursday heard the habeas corpus petition filed by Ranya's stepmother, H P Rohini, challenging Kannada actor Ranya Rao's detention under the Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act, 1974 (COFEPOSA) Act.
Kannada actress Ranya Rao's stepfather, Ramchandra Rao, who had been sent on compulsory leave, has been reinstated as Director General of Police, Directorate of Civil Rights Enforcement and his leave has been withdrawn.
