Tamil Nadu BJP President K. Annamalai postponed the 'En Mann En Makkal' (My Land, My People) yatra till December 5 due to warning of heavy rains in the state by the Indian meteorological department.
Chennai received heavy rains throughout the day on Wednesday, and the intensity of the showers increased in the evening, causing major traffic snarls across the city.
Several parts of Tamil Nadu, including the capital city of Chennai, were drenched with incessant rainfall on Wednesday evening, leading to the inundation of several low-lying areas, heavy traffic jams, and disruption to normal life.
As rains inundated several areas in Chennai, 200 cubic feet of water was released at 10 am due in Sembarambakkam lake, which is the source of drinking water for Chennai City.
Farmers in more than twenty villages in Gudiyattam taluks are elated as the groundwater levels will be recharged, proving beneficial for future farming.
"Due to heavy rains in Gujarat on November 26 and 27, 27 people and 79 animals have lost their lives. CM Bhupendra Patel has instructed us to do a survey and provide compensation for the same. We have started the relief work," the Health Minister said.
Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MP Supriya Sule on Monday urged the Maharashtra government to help the farmers after unseasonal rains damaged crops across the state.
Various governments have attempted to implement plans for large storage dams, but political interference has continuously impeded these crucial projects.
Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) M R Ajith Kumar called the incident a 'freak accident' and said that the sudden rains in the area drove the huge crowd of students to the stampede since all of the students tried to take cover from the rainfall.
