Uttar Pradesh Congress President Ajay Rai on Thursday slammed the state government over the murder of a Dalit man in Raebareli, alleging that they are "engaged in oppression and injustice."
Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and Congress MP on Friday left Delhi to meet the family of the Dalit man, who was allegedly killed by a mob in Uttar Pradesh's Raebareli.
Officials will be pursuing case under the National Security Act (NSA) and Gangsters Act, Rarebareli Superintendent of Police Yashveer Singh said. The accused have been identified as Vijay Singh, Vaibhav Singh, Vipin Maurya, Sahedev Pasi, and Suresh Kumar Maurya and others.
"The number of crimes against Dalits, minorities, and the poor in the country has increased beyond limits. This violence disproportionately affects those who are deprived, marginalised, and lack adequate representation or participation," the party added.
Three police officers, including a Sub-Inspector, have been suspended in connection with the death of a person after allegedly being assaulted by a group of people who "mistook him for a thief" in Uttar Pradesh's Raebareli, according to the police.
The accused, identified as Nahar Nat alias Rahul, has 20 cases registered against him and was wanted in 11 of them. He sustained a gunshot injury during the encounter and was taken to hospital.
Before the DISHA meeting, the Congress leader met with the workers delegation of workers in the Feroze Gandhi Unchahar Thermal Power Station, under the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), where stayed the night before.
"The main slogan 'Vote chor, gaddi chhor' is being proved across the country. We will prove it again and again in more and more dramatic ways," the Congress leader said.
"Rahul Gandhi visited the Modern Rail Coach Factory in Rae Bareli and held detailed discussions with the officials. Railways is the country's 'lifeline'. Only by strengthening it can we ensure convenience and safety for passengers," Congress posted on X.
