Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar was among the first celebrities to reach a polling booth on Thursday morning to cast his vote in the ongoing Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections.
Voting began at 7:30 am today, with people queuing at their respective polling booths. A total of 1,700 candidates are set to contest the polls in Mumbai.
With Pune gearing up for the local body elections on January 15, District Collector Jitendra Dudi on Monday said that all polling arrangements have been completed and security measures are firmly in place.
The election in Payimpadam ward of Moothedam gram panchayat was postponed following the death of UDF candidate Vattath Haseena, which occurred three days before the scheduled polling date.
The polling for 29 municipal corporation elections across the state, including Mumbai, Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, will be held on January 15, with vote counting scheduled for January 16. December 30 was the last day for filing nominations.

A training camp was organised for Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials and other workers who will be on duty for the BMC polling on January 15 in Mumbai.
The poll marks the first nationwide election organised by the junta since it seized power in February 2021, a takeover that triggered mass protests and plunged the country into a brutal civil war that continues to this day.
