Villagers in parts of Hunza Valley in Pakistan-occupied Gilgit Baltistan (PoGB) have been facing an imminent threat of land destruction, as their homes have been destroyed due to the rapid melting of glaciers and overflowing of Hunza River.
This year, the rivers of PoGB expanded more than expected, destroying several households, farms, and other infrastructure. This could have been protected if measures were taken on time.
The protest has been going on for the last 11 days. As a result of this, several international tourists are stranded outside the customs office, waiting for clearance. Customs office operations have also been disrupted due to the protest, which has now expanded to the Karakoram Highway.
The calamity has triggered severe erosion, putting the general public and property at great risk. Currently, the Hunza and Shigar rivers are now flowing at alarming levels. As of now, these rivers have caused severe damage to settlements surrounding Passu and Shigar.
