Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday spoke with ministers and officials and took stock of the situation in the wake of excessive rainfall in parts of India.
Devotees offered prayer in several parts of the country on the occasion of the first Monday of the month of 'Sawan' 2023. Devotees were seen offering prayers at the Nageshwar Shiv temple in Kanpur and the Daksha Prajapati Shiv temple in Haridwar.
"Moderate rain is very likely over parts of Gharaunda, Karnal, Indri, Radaur, Panipat, Nilokheri, Thanesar, Pehowa, Shahabad, Ambala, Kalka, Barara, Jagadhri, Chhachhrauli, Narayangarh, Panchkula," IMD said in a bulletin.
Major cities in north India witnessed loss of life and property, disruption in transport and power as heavy rainfall lashed parts of Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Himachal Pradesh, on Sunday, leading to waterlogging, flash floods, and landslides.
"It has been raining continuously for the last two days in Punjab, due to which people are facing difficulties in the low-lying areas and especially in the areas near the rivers. I have issued instructions to all my Ministers, MLAs and DCs and SSPs of all districts to reach out to people,
"Thunderstorms with light to moderate intensity rain would occur over and adjoining areas of isolated places of Delhi," the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in a tweet on Sunday morning.
Persistent rainfall since early morning on Saturday left some parts of Moradabad city waterlogged, with several residents complaining of commuting woes.
West Bengal witnessed several incidents of violence and arson during the voting for the three-tiered panchayat polls in rural parts of the state on Saturday.
