Communist Party of India (CPI) MP Binoy Viswam on Thursday termed the Centre's decision to abstain from voting in the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Resolution regarding the Palestine Issue an "act of abstinence" and said that the decision is a departure from India's previous stance.
Notably, the draft resolution 'Israeli practices affecting the human rights of the Palestinian people in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem' was adopted by a recorded vote on Friday, with 87 votes in favour, 26 against and 53 abstentions, including India.
"Behind the figures, there are the faces, personalities, talent and commitment of those who have paid with their lives for their information gathering, their search for the truth and their passion for journalism," said Christophe Deloire, RSF secretary-general.
While addressing the United Nations Security Council, Indian Permanent Representative to the UN, Ruchira Kamboj said, "No alternative to the two-State solution to guarantee lasting peace between Israel and Palestine and direct negotiation the only path that can lead us there."
"On the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian people, I reiterate India's unwavering support to the Palestinian cause," the statement reads.
In a statement, India's Representative Office in Ramallah said this will support the agency's core programs and services, including education, healthcare, relief and social services.
