After the flash flood caused large-scale destruction in Sikkim, troops of the Indian Army, along with BRO (Border Road Organisation) and the assistance of civil administration and locals, are undertaking operations on a massive scale to reconnect North Sikkim.
In a daring mission conducted in North Sikkim, troops of Indian Army's Trishakti Corps rescued 245 persons stranded in the village of Rabom due to flash floods in Sikkim, the officials said on Sunday.
"As per information received from Army Traffic Control Points, Chungthang, the water levels have risen in the Muguthang area and proceeding downstream. All those in the low-lying areas are advised to stay alert," said the Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority.
The focus of the operations is towards restoring connectivity to North Sikkim through Chungthang, which was the worst affected during the devastating flood that occurred after the landslides, the Indian Army said in a statement.
As per the Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority (SSDMA) report of October 9 at 10:00 am, the death toll was registered at 34. It further said that 105 have been reported as missing.
As many as 56 civilians stranded due to the recent flash floods were rescued by the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) in North Sikkim, the officials said on Sunday.
Director General of Border Roads Lieutenant General Rajeev Chaudhry on Saturday visited the disaster-affected areas in North Sikkim affected by the recent flash floods in the state earlier this month.
As many as 68 people, stranded at the height of 16,000 feet due to the recent flash flood, were rescued by Himveers of Indo-Tibetan Border Police here in North Sikkim, officials said on Friday.
The search and rescue operation by the Indian Army for the 22 missing soldiers continues. Meanwhile, Troops of Trishakti Corps are extending medical aid and telephone connectivity to civilians and tourists stranded in the areas of Chungthang, Lachung and Lachen in North Sikkim.
The National Highway-10 connecting Gangtok to Siliguri has been completely washed away near the Likhuvir-Setijhora stretch. Immediate repairs on a war footing will be taken as and when the water recedes in Teesta. The Chief Engineer along with the entire team has rushed to the location.
