A large number of passengers gathered at platform numbers 12 and 13 of New Delhi Railway Station due to a delay in the departure of the following major trains.
In the meeting, it was decided that passengers without tickets or waiting list tickets would have to wait in the outside 'waiting area' as those with confirmed tickets would be given direct access to the platforms.
The stampede occurred at the New Delhi Railway Station on February 15, which claimed the lives of 18 people. The tragedy occurred at 10 p.m. as lakhs of devotees were heading to Prayagraj for the Maha Kumbh 2025 festival, causing significant overcrowding at the station.
The Delhi High Court on Wednesday sought a response from the Railways regarding a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) over the recent stampede at New Delhi Railway Station during peak hours, which resulted in the loss of 18 lives.
Speaking to ANI, Shiv Sena (UBT) spokesperson Anand Dubey said, "It is very unfortunate that no one is able to stop the irresponsible behaviour of the Central government. Very big negligence has been made by the Railway Ministry and Central government officials."
Government Railway Police (GRP) SSP Prashant Kumar on Sunday said that they were coordinating with the railways and the local police to ensure smooth functioning as people continue to flock to the Lucknow railway station to visit the ongoing Mahakumbh Mela in Prayagraj.
Earlier in the day, Indian Railways gave an ex-gratia of rupees 10 lakh to the kin of all the 18 deceased. An amount of rupees 2.5 lakh to grievously injured passengers and a compensation of rupees 1 lakh for passengers with minor injury were distributed to the 15 injured during the day.
"The common Indian cannot be left at the mercy of such a Railway Minister who calls the death of people a 'minor incident' and hides the death toll instead of expressing sympathy for the victims," Shrinate added.
