The meeting between members of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024 and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has concluded and the final report on the bill has been submitted to the Lok Sabha Speaker, Om Birla.
The chairman of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill and BJP MP Jagdambika Pal on Thursday arrived at the Parliament to meet the Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and submit his committee's final report on the bill.
"The UCC law in Uttarakhand is undemocratic, unconstitutional and an assault on the fundamental rights of citizens. Therefore, it is absolutely unacceptable to us," AIMPLB said in a press release.
The Waqf Amendment bill aims to overhaul the Waqf Act of 1995, which governs the management of Waqf properties in India. The bill has been a subject of controversy, with opposition parties alleging that it undermines the rights of Muslims and the federal structure of India.
The JPC Chairperson, Jagdambika Pal, stated that the amendments were accepted based on a majority vote, with 16 members supporting the changes and 10 opposing them.
He said that the Waqf board issue remains important since it is connected to the future of Muslims. He said that they have prepared a memorandum and plan to discuss their concerns in a step-by-step manner.
