After the RBI projected more than 7 per cent of GDP growth for the entire financial year 2024-25, a latest report by State Bank of India noted that a rate cut with a 7 per cent growth never happened in the history.
The ongoing volatility in the prices of key food items such as tomatoes, onions, and potatoes (collectively known as TOP) and pulses continues to pose significant challenges for the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), highlights a report by SBI.
In its previous meeting in early June, the central bank’s monetary policy committee unanimously decided to keep the repo rate unchanged at 6.5 per cent, something most analysts had expected. The RBI in its April meeting too had paused the repo rate.
The Reserve Bank of India, in its first monetary policy review meeting in 2023-24, decided to keep the key benchmark interest rate - the repo rate - unchanged at 6.5 per cent.
SBI Research, in a report published moments before the RBI meeting started, said India's central bank is expected to pause the policy rate hike during the February 6-8 review meeting.
The Monetary policy committee (MPC), which determines interest rates, opted to raise the policy repo rate by 35 basis points to 6.25 per cent with immediate effect.
