Actor and Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) president Kamal Haasan was officially elected to the Rajya Sabha and received his election certificate on Thursday at the Chennai Secretariat. The certificate was handed over by Election Returning Officer Subramani.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader H. Raja on Saturday criticised Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) President chief Kamal Haasan, saying that the actor-turned-politician has "mortgaged" his party in exchange for a Rajya Sabha seat.
Makkal Needhi Maiam President and Actor Kamal Haasan filed his nomination for Rajya Sabha at the Tamil Nadu secretariat in the presence of DMK President and state Chief Minister MK Stalin and his Deputy Udhayanidhi Stalin.
Haasan pointed out that leaders from various linguistic and regional backgrounds have served as the state's Chief Ministers and said, "Tamil Nadu is a state where a Menon (MG Ramachandran) has been our Chief Minister, where a Reddy (Omandur Ramasamy Reddiyar) has been our Chief Minister,
"Tamilians have lost their lives for a language. Don't play with those things. Tamilians, even children, know what language they need. They have the knowledge to choose which language they need," Kamal Haasan said, referring to the longstanding sentiment for linguistic autonomy.
