Flower petals were showered on the devotees who arrived for a 'snaan' at the Sangam in Prayagraj on the occassion of Mauni Amavasya during the ongoing Magh Mela.
"Proper arrangements have been made, and all the officials are present at the spot. Nearly 50 lakh devotees have bathed at Sangam till 4 AM," Divisional Commissioner of Prayagraj Division told ANI.
"It is a spiritual congregation comparable to the Kumbh Mela of South India. The festival is believed to have begun during the reign of Cheraman Perumal and later continued under the leadership of the Valluvakonathiri," Bharathi told ANI.
"Malicious efforts are being made from certain quarters to point fingers at the safety and security arrangements of the Gangasagar mela, which has recently ended without any untoward incident, barring an accidental fire that had caused no harm to anyone," the post noted.
