Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday said 2,789 people have been arrested so far during the ongoing crackdown on child marriage across the state.
Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi on Friday slammed Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for a campaign against child marriage in the state after a 16-year-old pregnant girl died while she was on her way to the hospital in Bongaigaon district of Assam.
The Assam Cabinet on Thursday complimented Assam police for its campaign against child marriage, and further directed it to continue with the clampdown.
Maulana Mahmood Madani, president of Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind while talking to ANI said that the action being taken against parents of children in Assam should not happen. If something is being done against a particular community, then people will raise their voices, he said on Wednesday.
