Himachal Pradesh Congress on Monday staged a protest and dharna against the Central government over the law to replace the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) and said it would weaken the scheme's original objectives.
The Act guarantees 125 days of wage employment per rural household, up from the existing 100 days, for adult members willing to undertake unskilled manual work.
Shivakumar said he had personally implemented MGNREGA in his Kanakapura constituency, where the BJP had earlier alleged irregularities and conducted an investigation.
Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh shared the background of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), now reformed as the Viksit Bharat-Guarantee for Rozgaar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) Bill (VB-G RAM-G), in a post on X.
Ramesh underscored the burning of effigies of Ambedkar, Sardar Patel, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Mahatma Gandhi at Ramlila Maidan days after the adoption of the Constitution of India on November 26, 1949. "Which ideology created this atmosphere, due to which Mahatma Gandhi was killed?" he aske

Congress leader Supriya Shrinate on Sunday strongly criticised the newly VB-G RAM-G Bill, 2025, which replaces the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, 2005 (MGNREGA), alleging that it removes Mahatma Gandhi's name and scraps the guarantee of employment.
"They hate Mahatma Gandhi's name, and they hate the laws enacted during the Congress regime. I don't understand why they rushed this through," Ramesh said, adding that the law was enacted without consultations with state governments.
Senior Congress leader V. Hanumantha Rao on Sunday strongly criticised the Centre's proposed VB-G RAM G Bill, alleging that the government has diluted the spirit of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) by removing Mahatma Gandhi's name and shifting the fina
