Six people hailing from Ekkiyarkuppam near Marakkanam in Villupuram district died on Sunday. In Maduranthagam in Chengalpattu district, two persons died on Friday and a couple died on Sunday, all caused due to illicit liquor consumption, officials said.
In a tragic incident, three people died and 16 others were hospitalised in Marakkanam of Tamil Nadu's Viluppuram after allegedly consuming spurious liquor, the police said on Sunday.
According to the officials, seven vehicles were rushed to the spot and efforts are underway to douse the fire that broke out in the shop located near Golf Course Road.

A Special PMLA Court in Raipur extended the custody of Anwar Dhebar, who was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with an alleged liquor scam to the tune of around Rs 2000 crore, on Wednesday.
According to the officials, a large quantity of illegal liquor has been seized during the search in Dinarpur and Sahdevpur under the Pathri police station area in Haridwar.
"The liquor scam unearthed by ED is one of the biggest corruption cases in the country, therefore CM Bhupesh Baghel should immediately resign from his post," Naryan Chandel said.
