Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday released a book titled "Assam's Braveheart - Lachit Barphukan" in the presence of Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma in a programme held at Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra in Guwahati.
Born on November 24, 1622, Barphukan was known for his leadership in the Battle of Saraighat, 1671 in which an attempt by Mughal forces to capture Assam was thwarted.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will inaugurate and lay the foundation stone of several developmental projects, schemes worth more than Rs 750 crore in Barak Valley during his two-day long visit to the region commencing from September 7.
He also took stock of the physical progress of the 125 feet statue of Veer Lachit Barphukan. He had a meeting with the engineers of Ahluwalia Contract Limited, the construction agency, and asked them to complete the construction by the end of 2024.
"Recently, I met those brave daughters who had gone to Turkiye in the rescue mission after the disastrous earthquake there. They were a part of the NDRF unit. Their courage and efficiency is being talked about in the whole world," PM Modi said.
