Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi administered the oath of office to Justice Sushrut Arvind Dharmadhikari as Chief Justice of the Madras High Court at Lok Bhavan on Friday.
The appointment will take effect from the date Justice Gupta assumes charge, following the superannuation of the incumbent Chief Justice, Justice Guhanathan Narendar, on January 9, 2026.
Announcing the decision, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal said the appointment was made in exercise of powers conferred by the Constitution of India and in consultation with the Chief Justice of India.
Justice Sonak will assume office upon the retirement of the incumbent Chief Justice, Justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan, who is due to demit office on January 8, 2026.
In February 2024, the Supreme Court Collegium recommended the transfer of Justice Sujoy Paul from the Madhya Pradesh High Court to the Telangana High Court.
