Far-right candidate Jose Antonio Kast has emerged victorious in Chile's presidential runoff, becoming the country's 38th president and ending the tenure of the centre-left government, Al Jazeera reported.
With 52.39 percent of ballots tallied on Sunday evening, Jara -- a 51-year-old communist candidate representing an eight-party coalition -- led with 26.58 percent, followed by Kast on 24.32 percent, according to electoral authority Servel.
More than 14 million citizens are eligible to cast ballots to renew the full Chamber of Deputies and nearly half the Senate, a vote seen as pivotal for Chile's political balance, according to Euro News.
