106-year-old Shyam Saran Negi, the first voter of Independent India, exercised his right to franchise for the 34th time for the Himachal Pradesh Assembly elections through a postal ballot at his residence in Kinnaur district on Wednesday.
Born in July 1917, Shyam Saran Negi voted for the first time in 1951 in the general elections of India and has voted for sixteen times in Lok Sabha Elections. He cast his vote in every Lok Sabha, Vidhan Sabha and all local bodies right after 1951.
During the past 24 hours, cash worth Rs. five lakh and around 1215.470 liters of illicit liquor worth Rs. 1,90,069 was seized during the checks carried out by the police department at various places in the state.
Speaking about the forthcoming assembly elections, Yechury said that with the Election Commission delinking the announcement of election schedules of Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat, "the BJP has got the advantage of more time before the Model Code of Conduct comes into effect in Gujarat".
