Nepal Government on Thursday rejected the demands of the main opposition, the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist) to form a parliamentary committee to probe the 100 kg gold smuggling case.
House Speaker Devraj Ghimire issued a notice announcing the adjournment of the meeting. “The next meeting has been rescheduled for tomorrow (Tuesday) at 1 pm,” Shekhar Adhikari, press advisor to the house speaker confirmed to ANI over the phone call.
As the investigative agencies have failed to name the main accused in the case of smuggling of a quintal of gold disguised as a brakeshoe, the opposition as well as some lawmakers of the ruling coalition have demanded the resignation of Home Minister Narayan Kaji Shrestha.
On July 18, over a quintal of gold was seized concealed inside motorcycle brake shoes as the consignment was taken away in a taxi after getting customs clearances from the Tribhuvan International Airport.
Nepal’s Department of Revenue Investigation on Wednesday arrested two people and seized gold, weighing anywhere between 80 and 100 kgs, from their possession.
In the first case, gold weighing 1.225 kgs valued at Rs 72.55 lakhs was seized. In the second case, 500 gms of smuggled gold valued at Rs 30.51 lakhs was seized.

Delhi police have registered a case against two persons for allegedly threatening a Customs investigation officer who is investigating a gold smuggling case against them.
