India's efforts have resulted in the reduction of TB incidence by 16 per cent in 2022 (from 2015), almost double the pace at which global TB incidence is declining (which is 8.7 per cent) while the mortality of TB has also reduced by 18 per cent during the same period in India and globally.
India has performed far better on major metrics as compared to other countries over time, however, it registered 21.4 lakh TB cases in 2021, 18 per cent higher than in 2020.
The burden of drug-resistant TB (DR-TB) also increased by 3 per cent between 2020 and 2021, with 450 000 new cases of rifampicin-resistant TB (RR-TB) in 2021. This is the first time in many years an increase has been reported in the number of people falling ill with TB and drug resistant TB.
