According to Delhi Police, Mahender Jain, resident of Raj Nagar, Palam Colony, Delhi, received a complaint through NCRP regarding a digital arrest and duping of Rs 25 Lakhs by unknown fraudsters. Later, he also gave a written complaint on 10 April at Police Station Cyber South West, Delhi.
Bollywood actress Tillotama Shome claimed that she recently became a target of an online impersonation scam. She alerted her followers after learning that a fraudster was allegedly using her identity to solicit favours from her peers.
The cybercriminals called the victim over WhatsApp, impersonating Nashik police on March 17 and continued talking to him for around 20 days. The fraudsters made transactions of the amount to different accounts in between, he added.
In a shocking case of cybercrime, fraudsters have created a fake Facebook profile impersonating Joint Commissioner Madhur Verma of the Delhi Anti-Corruption Branch. The scammers are targeting people in Verma's social circle by sending deceptive messages.
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has undertaken various initiatives to prevent the misuse of telecom resources for cybercrime and financial fraud. Fraudsters are deploying various tactics to misuse telecom resources, said a press statement from the Ministry of Communications.
"The fraudsters were found involved in a well-designed module wherein victims were falsely lured for mobile tower installations in exchange for hefty registration fees," police said.
