The Himachal Pradesh Kisan Sabha and the Apple Growers Association on Monday announced plans to file a petition in court to stop the ongoing cutting down of orchards. They also demanded land rights for landless farmers under central legislation.
In a press conference held in Shimla on Monday, the Himachal Kisan Sabha and the Himachal Seb Utpadak Sangh demanded an immediate halt to the felling of apple trees and called for proper demarcation of land instead of mass clearances.
"From our recent eviction experience, we have seen that people originally from districts 400 km away have encroached upon lands in predominantly Hindu constituencies. There is a concerted effort to change the demography of our constituencies," Sarma said.
