Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Sunday met family members of Jawan Saroj Kumar Das, who was killed in the Sikkim flash floods, in Dhenkanal, Odisha.
After the flash flood caused large-scale destruction in Sikkim, troops of the Indian Army, along with BRO (Border Road Organisation) and the assistance of civil administration and locals, are undertaking operations on a massive scale to reconnect North Sikkim.
Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang visited Chungthang on Sunday, where a dam was washed away after flash floods on October 4. The Chief Minister assessed the extent of destruction caused by the washing away of the Teesta Stage III dam and the flood at the Teesta basin, said officials
The death toll in the Sikkim flash floods increased to 40, and 76 people are still missing in the disaster-hit state, an official statement said on Tuesday.
Over 8,733 labourers will be handed the relief fund after they were affected South Lhonak Lake Glacial Lake Outburst Flood across the Teesta Basin in the State.
In a daring mission conducted in North Sikkim, troops of Indian Army's Trishakti Corps rescued 245 persons stranded in the village of Rabom due to flash floods in Sikkim, the officials said on Sunday.
Indian Air Force (IAF) evacuated over 1700 persons and the rescue operations will continue in flood-affected areas of Sikkim, the IAF officials said on Saturday.
"As per information received from Army Traffic Control Points, Chungthang, the water levels have risen in the Muguthang area and proceeding downstream. All those in the low-lying areas are advised to stay alert," said the Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority.
