After recent attacks on merchant vessels off the Indian coast, the Navy has deployed task groups comprising 'destroyers' and 'frigates' to have a complete maritime domain awareness in the region, officials said on Sunday.
Notably, MV Chem Pluto, with 20 Indian and one Vietnamese crew member, caught fire on Saturday after it was attacked by a suspected drone. It was later secured by the Indian Coast Guard.
The Indian Navy commissioned the indigenously built stealth-guided missile destroyer INS Imphal on Tuesday in the presence of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Navy chief Admiral R Hari Kumar, Maharashtra Chief Minister Ekanth Shinde and other dignitaries.
"Named the capital of Manipur, she is the first warship to represent a prominent city of north-east Bharat, aptly highlighting the importance attached by the government to this region," Admiral Kumar said.
The Indian Navy is all set to commission its latest stealth-guided missile destroyer, Imphal, at the Naval Dockyard, Mumbai, on December 26, in the presence of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh as the Chief Guest.
The event marks the formal induction into the Navy of the third of four 'Visakhapatnam' class destroyers, indigenously designed by the Indian Navy's in-house organisation, Warship Design Bureau and constructed by Mazagon Dock Limited, Mumbai.
