Manmohan Singh passed away at AIIMS, Delhi, on Thursday evening at the age of 92 due to age-related medical conditions. He had suffered a sudden loss of consciousness at home and was subsequently rushed to AIIMS, Delhi.
The Cabinet paid homage to the late veteran Manmohan Singh by observing a two-minute silence. The State mourning has been declared for seven days till January 1, 2025. During this mourning period, the National Flag will be flown at half-mast across Bharat.
Akbaruddin, who served as India's Permanent Representative to the UN, said Manmohan Singh was an architect of modern India in many ways and had opened up the country's economy and ushered in reforms. He praised Manmohan Singh's role in steering the India-US nuclear accord.
"It is an unfortunate incident for the nation. He was a world figure. I would call him the Einstein of the economy...His contributions will be remembered by the Amritsar and the whole country. It is a national loss," Bajwa told ANI.
