Customs department on late Tuesday recovered gold weighing over 500 grams, estimated to be worth about Rs 25. 75 lakhs, from a passenger at Cochin International Airport in Kerala, officials said.
Customs officials on Tuesday seized gold weighing 554.600 grammes from a passenger at Cochin International Airport. The passenger was concealing the gold inside his rectum, the officials said.
"On the basis of profiling done by the officers of Customs AIU batch, a passenger coming from Dubai to Cochin International Airport by flight EK 530 was intercepted at the green channel," an official familiar with the matter said.
A full emergency was declared at the Kochi airport after a flight was suspected to have suffered a hydraulic failure en route from Sharjah to Kochi, informed Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL).
"During the examination of the said passenger, one white coloured stripe, suspected to be gold in a compound form totally weighing 281.88 grams concealed in the specially stitched cavity of jeans pants worn by the passenger were recovered and seized," the customs department added.
