Chief Justice of India BR Gavai on Wednesday said he would examine the ongoing issue relating to community dogs, after an advocate mentioned the matter, saying different benches of the Supreme Court have issued conflicting directions.
The remark seemed to be a jab at former Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, who retired on November 8, 2024, but only recently moved out of his official residence.
A bench of Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai and Justice K Vinod Chandran directed the Speaker of the Telangana Assembly to decide over the disqualification petitions as expeditiously as possible and in any case within a three-month time.
The CJI reasoned that it would not be appropriate for him to hear the matter as he was part of the conversation regarding the controversy surrounding Justice Varma.
Speaking at the Bombay High Court in an event organised by the Bombay Bar Association, CJI Gavai highlighted ongoing efforts to ensure a more inclusive and transparent appointment process. He noted that this approach had been strengthened since the tenure of Justice Sanjiv Khanna.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis asserted that the three new criminal laws--Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam are not just a change in the nomenclature but also the Indianisation of these laws.
Speaking at an event in Nagpur, CJI Gavai said, "... If the country wants to remain united, the country needs only one constitution. A separate constitution for a state was not in line with Babasaheb Ambedkar's ideology, so we unanimously accepted the decision (of abrogation of Article 370)
Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai stressed the importance of the Indian Constitution, stating that it has "defined the boundaries" of the three wings of government--legislature, executive, and judiciary.
On the 11th International Yoga Day, yoga was also performed at the Administrative Building Complex of the Supreme Court in Delhi on Saturday. Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai was also present at the event and participated in the session. He also addressed the other participants who w
