The World Health Organisation (WHO) has issued a medical product alert after three contaminated oral liquid medicines (cough syrups) were identified in India. The medicines, commonly used to treat cold, flu, and cough symptoms, have been linked to cases of severe illness and child fatalities
The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) sought a list of all cough manufacturing companies from all States. According to the sources, the CDSCO will conduct inspections, testing, and audits of all companies manufacturing cough syrup.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) is closely monitoring the health situation in India amid clusters of pediatric illnesses and deaths in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, a statement said.
While the ministry clarified on possible contamination of cough syrups, a multi-disciplinary expert team is also investigating all other possible causes for the deaths, with samples of water, entomological vectors, and respiratory specimens also being investigated.
