The first gene-edited calf with resistance to the bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDV), which costs the U.S. cow industry billions of dollars every year, has been created by scientists working together.
"Under a project by National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal to work on cloning of indigenous cow breeds such as Gir and Sahiwal, India's first cloned Gir female calf named 'Ganga' weighing 32 kg was born and is growing well," the NDRI said in a release.
National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal has produced the country's first cloned female calf of the desi breed Gir which can produce more than 15 litres of milk per day.
The day-long event was attended by Assam's agriculture and dairy minister Atul Bora, food and civil supplies, consumer affairs minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass, and minister for cooperation Nandita Gorlosa. Meenesh C Shah, Chairman, NDDB too graced the occasion as a special guest.
