Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Sunday announced Azad Group's chief, Sukhwinder Kaur Randhawa, as their candidate for the upcoming by-election in Tarn Taran constituency.
Kerala BJP President Rajeev Chandrasekhar accused the Congress party of aligning with Jamaat-e-Islami during the Nilambur by-election and said the party's pursuit of appeasement politics undermines its claims of constitutional and secular values.
Kerala State BJP President Rajeev Chandrasekhar claimed on Sunday that the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) won the recent Nilambur Assembly by-election due to support from Jamaat-e-Islami, which he described as an "illegal, anti-national, and anti-constitutional' organisation."
"The public contested these elections... I was only a medium. When the people contest the elections themselves, it is confirmed that the results would be historic... The BJP did everything to win these elections... This is people's win," Italia said while speaking to ANI.
While most of the parties like Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) retained their seats in this by-elections, but the Pinarayi Vijayan-led LDF government in Kerala faced a major blow, as the alliance failed to retain its Nilambur assembly seat.
The AAP retained the seat as the by-election was necessitated following the death of AAP MLA Gurpreet Singh Gogi in January. Voting took place on June 19.
According to the Election Commission of India, Alifa received 1,02,759 votes while BJP's Ghosh received 52,710 votes. Congress' Shaikh managed to get 28,348 votes while 2,502 votes went to NOTA (None of the above).
The AAP party workers celebrated the election results in Gujarat, as Gopal Italia defeated BJP's Kirit Patel by 17,554 votes, garnering 75,942 votes in total.
convener Arvind Kejriwal on Monday said in a press conference that the results of the Visavadar and Ludhiana West by-elections indicate that people are "fed up with the BJP".
TMC's Alifa Ahmed maintains a commanding lead of 33,255 votes over BJP's Ashish Ghosh in the Kaliganj by-election after 14 rounds of counting. Mamata Banerjee expressed her gratitude to voters and dedicated the victory to the late legislator Nasiruddin Ahmed.
