The drilling work at Uttarkashi's Silkyara tunnel to evacuate 41 trapped workers was halted again on Thursday night after the auger machine encountered a technical snag.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on Tuesday said that the most 'focused effort' of rescuers working at the Silkyara tunnel collapse site is the 'horizontal drilling' through the Auger machine to evacuate the 41 workers trapped for 10 days in the 2-km-built portion of the
"We are inserting a 900-mm-diameter pipe with the help of the Auger machine. We have reached 22 meters and we are going ahead rapidly," Uttarakhand Disaster Management Secretary Ranjit Sinha said.
Chris Cooper who is also a consultant for the Rishikesh Karnprayag rail project has reached the site to monitor the rescue operation of 40 workers trapped inside the tunnel for six days now.
According to authorities, a platform is being prepared for an auger machine to drill horizontally and insert large diameter MS pipes in between the debris so that the trapped workers can be taken out throught the metal pipes.
