Continuing its operation against illegal cattle smuggling, Guwahati City Police have rescued and seized 85 cattle heads and arrested three cattle smugglers in Assam, said police on Wednesday.
Assam police on Tuesday seized over 31,000 bottles of cough syrup from a truck in Assam's Karimganj district along the Assam-Tripura border on Tuesday.
The Special Task Force (STF) of Assam police has apprehended 8 people including two Bangladeshi nationals from Tripura for helping illegal Rohingya immigrants enter India by using fake documents, officials said.
A sub-inspector of Assam Police was caught red-handed for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 20,000 in Jorhat district on Sunday, an official statement said.
"I am sure that we will be able to make Assam Police one of the top 10 police forces of the country by 2026 due to its sustained reforms," CM Sarma said while addressing a press conference held at the Assam Police Convention Centre in Bongaigaon after the SP conference.

"We cordoned the entire area and seized 51 cattle heads including two cows and 49 buffaloes from the area and arrested 24 persons who were involved in cattle smuggling. It is one of the biggest successful operations," ASP Faruk Ahmed said.
Addressing the 4th SP conference being held at Bongaigaon on Friday, the Chief Minister said that in the wake of ‘love-jihad’, the police forces must be empowered with specific operating procedures to deal with the menace.

As Assam is aiming to make the state free from the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday asked state police to examine the mechanism of how Indian Army personnel can be freed up after withdrawal of AFSPA.
