A 31-member Joint Parliamentary Committee including 21 Lok Sabha MPs and 10 Rajya Sabha MPs has been constituted to look into the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024.
The current Bill proposes to simplify the legal framework by incorporating the proposals of the Indian Railway Board Act, 1905 in the Railways Act, 1989. This will reduce the need to refer to two laws. Instead reference will be required only to one law.
The bill provides for amending the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934, Banking Regulation Act 1949, State Bank of India Act, 1955, Banking Companies (Acquisition and Transfer of Undertakings) Act 1970, and Banking Companies (Acquisition and Transfer of Undertakings) Act, 1980.
