Turkey deported at least 9,000 refugees from Afghanistan back to the war-torn country since the beginning of 2023, Khaama Press quoted Human Rights Watch in Turkey as saying.
Since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan in August 2021, the citizens of the country have fled to different nations due to strict restrictions imposed by the de-facto authorities.
The UN Refugee Agency said people should not be punished or criminaliSed for exercising their fundamental human right to seek asylum. It also urged countries neighbouring Afghanistan, including Pakistan, to continue to protect those seeking safety.
Earlier, in October, the interior ministry of Pakistan had circulated an ad on TV and social media saying that foreign nationals, who overstayed in the country beyond December 31, 2022, will face serious consequences. The punishment included imprisonment and forceful deportation.
