Tropical storm Eta kills 26 in Honduras

India has extended humanitarian assistance to Madagascar following widespread devastation caused by tropical cyclones Fytia and Gezani earlier this year, reaffirming its support for the island nation during the ongoing relief efforts.

The fatalities in Mozambique were reported on Saturday, a day after the cyclone swept through Madagascar, where at least 41 people were killed and widespread destruction was recorded across the island.

There was widespread flooding due to the storm, which, according to the country's weather bureau bulletin at 11 am (local time) today, weakened into a tropical depression, packing maximum sustained winds of 55 kph near the centre and gustiness of up to 70 kph.

According to CNN, forecast models as of Wednesday indicate that the storm will form off the coast of the Carolinas early Saturday and strengthen rapidly enough to meet the criteria for a bomb cyclone. However, uncertainty remains over its exact track and intensity, which will determine which regions experience snow, strong winds or coastal impacts.

The cold spell is forecast to continue throughout the week, with conditions potentially peaking on Friday. Weather models also suggest that another round of snowfall could arrive over the weekend. For several days, forecasts have consistently indicated the possibility of a storm developing along the Southeast or Mid-Atlantic coastline, with the potential to become significant.

The storm across the southern United States has caused widespread power outages, particularly in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee, leaving hundreds of thousands without electricity as frigid temperatures linger. Officials say several additional deaths remain under investigation.

The storm has prompted widespread travel disruption, including mass flight cancellations and warnings to motorists to stay off icy roads, while at least 20 states and Washington, DC, declared states of emergency.

Heavy snowstorm has brought the US to a standstill, with over 190 million people under winter weather warnings and more than 1 million customers without power, across the mid-Atlantic and South. The storm has caused at least 7 deaths, including hypothermia cases in Louisiana and Texas, and exposure-related deaths in New York City.

More than 850,000 customers were without electricity, according to PowerOutage.us, with at least 290,000 in Tennessee and over 100,000 each in Mississippi, Texas and Louisiana. Other affected states include Kentucky, Georgia, Virginia, and Alabama.

Authorities confirmed on Sunday that the death toll has climbed to 10, as state-run media reported three more fatalities.
