Kolkata (West Bengal), Oct 25 (ANI): Renowned classical singer and Padma Vibhushan awardee Girija Devi passed away at the age of 88 following a cardiac arrest on Tuesday night, at a hospital in Kolkata. Girija Devi, who was fondly called Appa-ji, was admitted to the city’s BM Birla Heart Research Centre earlier in the afternoon with cardiovascular ailments. As per family sources, she was put on life support. Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled her death and tweeted, “Saddened by demise of Girija Devi ji. Indian classical music has lost one of its most melodious voices. My thoughts are with her admirers.” He added, “Girija Devi ji's music appealed across generations. Her pioneering efforts to popularise Indian classical music will always be remembered.” Host of celebrities, including Lata Mangeshkar, Javed Akhtar, singers Shubha Mudgal, Pankaj Udhas, took to Twitter and paid their tribute. Considered as the queen of thumri, Girija Devi had received Padma Shri in 1972, Padma Bhushan in 1989 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2016.
