A Chinese ship ran aground near Thitu Island in the disputed South China Sea due to bad weather. Filipino troops responded but the ship was later freed. Tensions remain high as such incidents happen amid ongoing maritime disputes between China and the Philippines.
Tiexian Reef, also referred to as Sandy Cay Reef, is located near Thitu Island, or Pagasa, where the Philippines has stationed troops and operates a coast guard monitoring base.
