The Sri Lankan Navy detained 22 Tamil Nadu fishermen and seized four fishing boats in two separate incidents on Wednesday, triggering unrest among the fishing community, according to the Vice President of the National Fishermen Association, CR Senthilvel.
While some of these fishermen were fishing in the Gulf of Mannar between Dhanushkodi and Thalaimannar, the Sri Lankan Navy arrived in the area and seized the motorboat IND-TN-10-MM-1072 owned by M Muniyasamy from Rameswaram and the four fishermen.
Fishermen in more than 400 boats went fishing from Rameswaram on Saturday. Many of them were fishing in the waters of the Gulf of Mannar between Dhanushkodi and Thalaimannar.
"Deeper connectivity promotes people-to-people interactions and commercial and business exchanges!! Minister @Murugan_MOS visited Thalaimannar, from where ferry services are proposed to be resumed between India and Sri Lanka," the High Commission of India in Colombo tweeted.
