Officials of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) on Wednesday resumed the rescue operation on Jawaharlal Nehru road in East Sikkim, where a massive avalanche came yesterday, claiming the lives of at least seven people and leaving several trapped under the snow.
Taking to Twitter, Jaishankar said, "The news of deaths and injuries due to catastrophic avalanche in Sikkim is deeply distressing. Condolences to the bereaved families. Wish the injured a speedy recovery."
Taking to Facebook, the Congress leader said, "Deeply distressed by the news of the massive avalanche in Sikkim's Nathu La that has trapped several tourists. My thoughts are with the victims of this terrible tragedy and their families. Wishing all the best to the teams involved in the rescue
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday expressed his condolences to the families of those who have lost their lives in the tragic avalanche in Sikkim, saying he was "distressed" by the mishap.
Seven persons were killed and many are feared trapped after an avalanche hit a site near Sikkim's Nathu La mountain pass on Tuesday, the Army said in a statement.
