Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday emphasised the government's commitment to implementing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the country, stating that his government was working with "full force" for a "Secular Civil Code".
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday dismissed Prime Minister Modi's comments on 'One Nation, One Election,' saying that the initiative is impossible without consensus in Parliament.
The All India Muslim Personal Law Board has stated that the uniform or secular civil code is not acceptable to Muslims as they will never compromise with Sharia Law (Muslim Personal Law).
Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivering his Independence Day speech to the nation on Thursday, batted for a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) stating that India will now have to move towards a secular civil code to free the country from religion-based discrimination.
"I would say that it is the need of the hour that there be a secular civil code in the country...We have spent 75 years in the Communal Civil code. Now we will have to move towards the secular code. Only then would we be free of discrimination on the basis of religion...," PM Modi said.
