The total number of people arrested in connection with child marriages escalated to 2,441, informed Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday.
Assam Police spokesperson Prasanta Kumar Bhuyan on Saturday said that so far 2,170 people involved in child marriage cases have been arrested in the state.
Assam police have arrested 139 people in Biswanath district as part of its state-wide crackdown on child marriages after CM Himanta Biswa Sarma directed to end the 'menace'.
Assam Director-General of Police (DGP) GP Singh said that in the last two days, police have registered over 4000 cases across different districts of the State.
While talking to the media, the Assam Chief Minister said, "Assam Police has arrested 1,800 persons in connection with child marriage-related cases across the state so far."
In a crackdown against people involved in child marriages in the state, Assam Police on Friday said that as many as 1,793 people have been apprehended so far across the state.
In a major twist in the case related to the recovery of bodies of seven members of a family from the Bhima river in Pune, police probe has revealed that they were allegedly murdered by their relatives.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday said that contraband drugs worth Rs 1,118.86 crore were seized in the state during the period from January 2021 to November this year.
In a statement, Police Commissioner Senthil Kumar said, "Police seized 567 packets of banned tobacco, 333 grams of ganja and 60 bottles of liquor illegally stashed in a simultaneous raid across Madurai city."
